In a customs union, member countroes agree to the same customs duties on goods arriving from non-member countries. That means that once goods have entered or are produced in the customs union, they don't need to be subject to border checks when they are traded between member countries. Keir Starmer has ruled out the UK joining a customs union with other European countries if Labour wins the next general election.
