Full question: The stated government position on Britain’s exit from the EU has been that by March 2019 the UK will leave the single market and the customs union. In her speech on Friday in Florence, Italy, the Prime Minister stated that for an additional 2 years after March 2019 the UK will continue to pay into the EU budget, and be bound by EU rules including free movement of goods, capital, services and labour. This period of “transition” would mean there would be no change to the current situation until March 2021, after which time the Prime Minister stated a new agreement would be reached with the EU.
