Privacy notice
In line with the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), there are certain things that we need to let you, a research participant, know about how your information will be processed. In this privacy notice, we explain the legal basis for data processing, who will have access to your personal data, how your data will be used, stored and deleted, and who you can contact a query or a complaint.
Who is the data controller and data processor?
The National Centre for Social Research is both the data controller and the data processor for the research.

What is the legal basis for processing my data?
For this research the legal basis for processing data is ‘legitimate interest’.
What personal data is being collected and why do you want to process this information?
This project aims to find out what people think about issues currently regulated by the EU. These topics include things like immigration, food safety and consumer regulation. Those who take part in the project are asked to respond to surveys and attend either online or face-to-face deliberative events, where people discuss the topics with each other and get to ask questions from experts.
We will collect survey data on participants’ views, as well as demographic data, such as age, gender, location and political preferences. We will also record small group discussions that take place during the deliberative events.
Who will have access to my personal data?
Survey responses and the transcribed recordings from the deliberative events will be used by NatCen and the wider research team in its research on the Future of Britain after the EU referendum. Only the research team will have access to your personal data.
The survey data and transcripts are also deposited in the UK Data Archive, where they can be used for research purposes. All responses are anonymised before being archived.
Do I have to take part?
Taking part in this study is completely voluntary. There is no statutory or contractual requirement to participate or provide any personal details. There will be no consequences if a participant chooses not to take part. Participants are able to withdraw from the research if they so wish, either during the event or after the event until their data has been processed.
How will my information be used?
Survey responses and the transcribed recordings from the deliberative events will be used by NatCen and the wider research team in its research on the Future of Britain after the EU referendum. The survey data and transcripts are also deposited in the UK Data Archive, where they can be used for research purposes. All responses are anonymised before being analysed and archived.
NatCen will write a series of academic articles and a book on the findings from the research. We will not name anybody in these outputs and it will not be possible to identify anybody who took part in the research.
How will my information be stored?
NatCen will carefully manage your personal data. All the information you provide will be held in strict confidence and held securely, so that only the research team will have access to your personal data. This data will not be held for any longer than is necessary to complete the research and will be deleted by June 2022.
The UK data archive will store survey responses and small group transcripts in anonymised form for an indefinite period of time.
Will I have access to my information?
Yes, but please note that once data is aggregated, pseudonymised, anonymised or survey results have been published, we would not be able to change the results by removing individual information.
However, you can always request that your personal data be deleted or updated, and we will let you know immediately if this is possible or not.
