People’s views of the merits of being a member of the EU could, in part, turn on how well or badly they think the EU and its various institutions operate as a whole. Do they think the EU is run democratically or undemocratically? Is it regarded as an effective mechanism for securing co-operation between its members or is it perceived to impose unwanted obligations on them? Is it thought to help maintain peace in Europe or not? Is it reckoned to make Europe a richer or poorer place?
